Young Enterprise success for 'Capoeira'

Capoeira is a successful business which was started by a group of year 10 pupils from Tomlinscore School as a Young Enterprise initiative. The company sells customised products, including t-shirts, hoodies, teddies, shoes, workwear and sportswear, and then get any type of print or embroidery added.

Capoeira managing director, Kevin Patrick (15), explained:
“Thanks to Young Enterprise, we have sold in many places which we never imagined we would! We sold at the Staines market, Walton shopping centre, P&G canteen and other great places. We enjoyed everywhere we sold and learned valuable lessons.

Young Enterprise may have finished, but Capoeira and its members have not stopped. We have now become a proper business and in fact we are some of the youngest people to ever start a business account with Barclays!

Capoeira at the moment are building up their core business, customisation, but very soon we are going into professional web designing. This is a very big step for us, and can be achieved if we work hard. Hopefully very soon, either this year or next, we are going to run the 'Young Apprentice', where we have 10 candidates, and we employ one amazing sales person.

Even though we are kids, we have dreams like no other. We are planning to open worldwide and become a well known brand. We want to make what our target market wants. We don't want to make things that people say no to; we will and are making and thinking of ideas that customers cannot resist.

As a YE group, we have learned many things. The main thing is that determination is the key to everything. If you're determined to win and be the best, you will in the end be the best. Together we were a determined group to win and be the best, which at the moment is becoming true. We have learned that teamwork makes life easier and more fun, and teamwork is the true success behind every business. We wrote the best business plan in the all the Young Enterprise companies and won a prize.

Fun for all at Family Learning Festival in Old Dean

Over 130 people came along to the Family Fun Day at the Youth Centre on Saturday 11th October 2008. The event was timed to coincide with Family Learning Festival which aims to promote learning together; which not only helps establish good communications, but helps develop skills and motivation in children.

Year One and Year Two children from Pine Ridge and Lorraine Infant Schools got events off to a great start with some well rehearsed songs as their families watched proudly.  After the singing, the Fun Day was in full swing and families had a really busy and enjoyable day; learning how to pay the guitar, the African Drums, make a Robot, a puppet or have their face painted.

Hubble was there with his puppet friends to entertain everyone with a fantastic performance and told everyone how much fun it was to learn together. Parents danced and children were encouraged to "boogie" with Boogie Mites and everyone had the chance to make a healthy lunch.

“It was a great day thanks, not only to all the partners who worked so hard to make the event possible, but of course to the families who participated”, commented Sarah Sewell

Families had the opportunity to find out about Pathways, a project to help people on incapacity benefits back into employment with A4e and adults could find out about local courses at the Old Dean Advisory Centre, with Brooklands College or Adult and Community Learning.

Organisers Elizabeth Whiddett from Surrey Lifelong Learning Partnership, Sarah Sewell from Surrey Heath Confederation of Schools and Paula Stubbings from Pine Ridge Children's Centre commented that the day really bought families together as a community to investigate, play and learn new things thanks to support from the Youth centre for the use of its facilities, the co-op for supplying the food and Surrey County Council for the main funding.

We hope to build on the success of this event by developing other opportunities for family learning. For further information about learning please contact Sarah Sewell, 07809 397811, for the Children's Centre Paula Stubbings for any other information Elizabeth Whiddett on 07970 932563

Hubble Community Enterprise

After its sucessful after-school clubs, Hubble Community Enterprise ran a PUPPETEERING HOLIDAY CLUB betwween  30th July - 3rd August 2007, operating in the Surrey Avenue community garden, Camberley, in a Marquee each day between 10.00 am - 2.00pm.  The marquee was open to up to 50 young people each day.

The holiday club ran daily and taught young people how to operate puppets and work as a team; including craft, games and other fun activities throughout the week. Lunchtimes were also fun times, where the young people made their own healthy options from the selection of food that was available to them.

Old Dean Residents Association

The CLP supported this group to make a bid for funds to run vocational skills courses for unemployed young people in first aid, construction skills and motor mechanics.  Recent courses have included Driving Theory lessons for unemployed young people and ESOL classes are on-going at Pineridge Infants School. Courses continued during September 2007 although some members of the group progressed onto college courses.

Egg-cellent art to go on display in Camberley town centre

The success of an art project in Camberley over Christmas has led to an offering of Easter-themed creations from artistic youngsters.

Students from four Camberley schools have created art work based on what Easter means to them and each piece will be exhibited in shop and office windows in the town centre in the run up to Easter 2007.

At Christmas Surrey Heath Borough Council, The Surrey Chambers of Commerce and Surrey Heath Community Learning Partnership worked together to organise a similar project which saw Christmas-themed art work displayed in the town centre. Following the success of the exhibition these three organisations have joined together again to bring the Easter project to fruition.

Sian Sangarde-Brown from the Surrey Heath Community Learning Partnership said: “Christmas was the first time we had organised this project. It was very well received by businesses and shoppers and the children really enjoyed taking part so we decided to roll it out to Easter.”

These exhibitions have become a regular event.

Jayne Boitoult Community Development Officer at Surrey Heath Borough Council said: ”This is a fantastic project which brings together businesses, schools and the public. It is great to see that this time we have also received art work from pupils who have disabilities.”

Cordwalles Junior School, Pine Ridge Infant School, Bristow Infant School and Portesbery Special School have all produced art for the exhibition.

Pauline Hedges from The Surrey Chambers of Commerce said: “This is not a competition. Each exhibit will be labelled with the artist's name, age and school and all artwork will be displayed in shop or office windows in the town centre for family, friends and shoppers to enjoy.”
