Elmbridge CLP

Elmbridge Community Learning Partnership is chaired by Jo Cox, Assistant Principal at Brooklands College. The CLP seeks to understand and communicate local learner need to partner organisations and to resolve local learning issues by delivering innovative pilot projects. An example of such a project is detailed below.

Projects

IT Family Learning Centres

Swansmere School parents and children IT club

This project was developed in response to the multiple needs of the families that utilised Swansmere School in North Walton (this has now become Walton Oak School).  The objective was to engage parents/carers and their children, by using IT facilities based at the school.  IT courses were developed in consultation with community preference and were constructed to include Basic Skills.  There was a focus upon Basic Skills to support parents to learn but also to assist them in the support of their children.

An IT drop-in centre was established at Swansmere School, staffed by outreach tutors from Brooklands College.  There was an initial group of 6 parents that used the facilities.  Funding was sourced from LIDF by Elmbridge CLP members.  This structure was then replicated at Chandlers Field School, South Molesey. There is now a waiting list for this provision.

On Track

In 2005/2006 the CLP has been working with the Multi Faith Forum and local schools on a project which would enrich and empower young people through the creation of study groups. Based on a project running in Swindon - the Swindon Youth Empowerment Project (SYEP), the study groups would contain about six to nine young people between the ages of 9-15 years who were or are displaying poor behaviour.

The basic principle is to take the students through a process that will make them aware of their actions and give them the tools to create a progressive future for themselves. The group would base their study from textbooks which stimulate discussions around self worth, respect for yourself and others. A significant part of the session would be the introduction of a 'tranquillity zone' where participants would read from scriptures of various religions or texts and be given time to reflect on the messages of the session.
